Trace Gas and Isotope FTIR Analyser
Designed for the precise measurement of trace gases and isotopes in ambient air including the full range of greenhouse gases.

Ecotech's latest analyser combines a Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectrometer, multi-pass gas sample cell and a high performance detector with sophisticated software for fully automated operation and real-time quantitative analysis of trace gases in air or other gas mixtures. It provides high repeatability and excellent reproducibility for multiple gas species simultaneously without the need for frequent gas calibrations. Although principally developed for precise measurements of trace gases and isotopes in ambient air, it is applicable to a wide range of other gases and measurement applications and is easily configured for different measurement requirements.
Features
- Continuous measurement of greenhouse gases and their isotopes
- Rapid real time measurement at mid IR wavelengths
- Measured spectra are saved allowing for optional re-analyses in order to improve measurement repeatability if desired.
- Exceeds GAW’s precision accuracy requirements for CO2, CH4, CO, N2O
- Continuous measurement of δ13C in CO2, δD-H2O, δ18O in H2O
- Long term stability without frequent calibration
- Optional onboard sample air drier and multiple inlet ports
Measurement Capability
Ambient air
- Simultaneous in situ measurement of CO2, CO, CH4, N2O, δ13C in CO2, δD-H2O and δ18O in H2O.
- Working calibration scale is based on the calculation of a best-fit to measured spectra without any need for actual calibration gas standards
- Absolute accuracy is established by reference to calibration gas standards.
Other gases
- Any gas for which either HITRAN-like absorption line parameters or a quantitative reference spectrum are available can be analysed (including reference spectra generated in own laboratory). Examples from recent work include NH3, fluorocarbons, HF and SiF4, combustion products.

Applications
The FTIR trace gas and isotope analyser is used by a wide variety of customers in a variety of applications. Customers have included the University of Wollongong, NIWA (NZ), CSIRO (AUS), University of Melbourne (AUS), ANSTO (AUS), University of Heidelberg (GER), Korean Standards Institute (KOR), University of Bremen (GER) , Max Planck Institute (GER) and Chinese Meteorological Administration (PRC).
Applications include:
- Continuous monitoring of air and other gas mixtures from one or more sample inlets
- Vertical profiles of trace gases (including water and CO2 isotopes) collected from inlets at various heights on a mast or tower (micrometeorological flux gradient measurements)
- Soil trace gas flux measurements using automated soil-cover chambers
- Automated batch analysis of flask or bag air samples
- Propagation of reference tank gas standards (when used as comparator)
