EcoRex is a new generation of Remote Terminal Unit (RTU) and designed to handle daily instrument Automatic Span Checks (AIC), manual multi-point calibration and transfers all data and records to the central computer database in user definable sequence.

EcoRex takes readings every second of all instruments and thirty-second averages are calculated as well as 5-minute, 1-hour and daily sliding averages. For each time-mode, the network management team establishes appropriate limits and EcoRex will generate alarms and alerts when instrument’s drift, malfunction or elevated environmental concentrations are detected. In an alarm situation, EcoRex will automatically connect to the central computer system and transfer all alarms and data for analysis.

EcoRex offers data logger functionality (data storage for weeks) but also supports user-definable data downloading frequency (daily, every few hours or minutes) and has the ability to seamlessly transfer between downloading modes. It also supports real-time connection if needed.

Reliability of Power Supply
The AC voltage going to the RTU power supply can vary +/- 40% (72 volts to 168 volts) without disrupting the RTU. If the power dips below 72 volts the 'watchdog chip' on the CPU card will hold the RTU reset until power goes back up again. At that time the 'watchdog' will release the reset line and the RTU will resume operation. The RTU operates with a rugged 12-volt DC power supply.

Reliability of CPU and Parts
The highest quality industrial grade parts are used and the chips are not pushed to run near maximum speed. As an example, the AP 1700 CPU is rated to 32 MHz but runs at 24 MHz to allow for voltage variations and manufacturing variations of the chip. The RTU has no moving parts and can run at temperatures of – 40 degrees Celsius. It is designed to restart reliably after each power failure.

The AP series cards have been used by Sherrex for gas well monitoring and control and other mission-critical operations (some examples of Sherrex wireless RTU usage is over 100 gas wells of Petro-Canada Whitecourt, Alberta gas plant, control of 5000 horsepower natural gas compressor motors, building control of University Hospital in Edmonton and security systems of University of Calgary).

Absolute Accuracy
The AP 1700 series cards use a 16 bit analog to digital converter (65 535 counts on + 10 V input), which has a delta-sigma front end to filter out 60 Hz power line noise that may be present on the signal from the instruments. Additionally the analog to digital converter does auto-calibrations once a second by setting its input to ground and adjusting to 'zero' then settings its input to a accurate reference to adjust to a full scale.
